HI there,
FInd out what is the reason why your parent did not allow you to keep rats at home. If they have valid reason, you should just understand it and accept their decision.
A lot of kids will lose interest in what they feel like doing very quickly. In the end, if you lost the interest, your parent will have to take care of the rats, and if they throw it away. The rats will not have a home anymore.
So do you think you can promise your mum you will take care of the rats on your own forever,
For your info, rats will give baby every 2 months, so if you keep it for a year, you will have more than 30 rats by then. Can you manage and ensure that the rats are all well taking care of.
Think twice and discuss with your parent. They love you and they disagree with you with a reason that contains lots of love for you too.

I have had pet rats in the past, unfortunately my daughter is allergic to their fur so I cannot have them anymore. Rats make great pets. They can be taught tricks and are fairly affectionate to their owners. I had a large black rat named Angus once. He went almost everywhere with me. People loved to pat him once they saw he was friendly.
On the downside. rats are a LOT of work, bathing, cage cleaning, vet visits, training. You can even train them to use a cats litterbox if you are patient enough. Do not be surprised by the occaisonal accident on your shoulder though.
You should first make absolutely sure that a rat is for you. At 13 and still in school, you may find yourself pressed for time as it is. A rat is not a keep it in the cage type of pet. They require a lot of user input.
If you still want one, try to sit down and find some good informational websites on rats. Get your mom, dad or both to sit down with you calmly and address their concerns.

i have a pet rat and his name is rocky
even though i love rocky with all my heart, i have to say its a very big commitment to take care of a pet.
rats can become smelly if they dont have a clean cage, and require worming and bathing as well as a good diet and excercise.
if i were you, i would think about waiting a little while longer for a pet rat because they are alot of responsibilty

If you have to con your Mother you will not enjoy your rat.Sit down and talk to her ,let her know you will pay for a cage and food etc,and that you will do everything for the pet.Maybe she just doesn't like the idea that she might end up cleaning the cage.Remember if you don't water and feed it someone has to.
