I rather doubt it. It might of happened in the 30's but back then there wasnt all the technology there is now and people watching out for stuff like that. Look how quickly the US was back on its feet and once again be on top. If the US were to collapse the whole world would come tumbling down right behind it unlike the USSR since the rest of the world didnt depend on them for everything like the rest of the world does on the US.

Well, if we learn from history, all great civilizations will eventually fall. Greeks, Romans, China, England, France (the list goes on)all held power for hundreds of years, but were eventually defeated. It's an ever changing world. Will it fall in the near future, no, but it will eventually change. Whether it is a complete collapse, or maybe it will evolve into something greater, it won't always be what we think of it now.

USSR collapsed from within, not from external factors. Economically, the US is quite robust at this time. Internal politics and social forces are more dynamic, but because of it's democratic underpinnings, change is really built-in to the system, so it could never really collapse.
The US could, and has, changed for the worse, by election of government contrary to its founding principles.

If it does , then so will wherever you live. I don't particularly like the
brashness of the Americans I have met travelling, but one has to concede that they have contributed hugely... good or bad... to our
modern world. Here is an interesting poser: there are no Americans..... they're just Europeans, Asians, Antipodeans etc.
that have found the USA a good place to contribute to our
changing world.

And if the human world is around long enough, I believe U.S. will become "The One World Power".
