There are different positions in a library and each has its own qualifications. For example, being a desk clerk may or may not require a bachelors degree while being a Librarian requires a Masters in Library Science. Volunteers do not need any special education however what you do is dependant on what they need you to do ... file books, check out books, etc. If you are interested in pursuing a job in a Library, definately volunteering will show you what it's all about before you invest in schooling for such a job only to find that you don't like it. In addition to public libraries, there are private libraries as well.

Hi, I work at a library. We always need volunteers especially if the library is a very busy library. It is helpful if you know the dewey decial system. There are diffrent kinds of jobs. One is a library page where you shelve books and check in books. Second is library clerk. You just need a high school degree for this. You must be able to pass a typing test to type at least 30 wpm and know the dewey decial (sp?) because they will test you on this.Third is a library assitant(sp?) where the job requires a bachelor degree in library science. To be a librarian it requires a master's degree in library science. Hope this helps!
