surface temp should be above 50 degrees. the label will tell you exactly. also remember to let surface dry before you start and also stop 4 hrs before the temp will be in that range to let paint set up.

If you are using an oil based stain, temps can be slightly lower than water based. Most oils won't freeze, but they won't cure at freezing temps either. Check the label and make sure the surface you are coating is at the recommended temp.

If you're planning to do it yourself, go to the paint supplier and read the label. Most will tell what the average daily temperature on application should be.
