i dont know about where you live, but in Texas it is a required vaccination for children entering pre-school, and it wont be much longer before they say all Kndg kiddos have to have it too.

Prevnar® is recommended for all children under 2 years of age, and certain high-risk children up to 5 years of age. Although not recommended routinely, all children aged 24-59 months may receive one dose of either the 23PS or Prevnar vaccine if desired.

Yes, it's a good shot to have, it prevents s. pneumoniae which causes a type of meningitis it's a three shot series though, not just one shot. It's generally started a lot earlier though.

Both my own kids both got it and they did fine. However, because it's the pneumonococcal virus, just like the HIB (influenza virus) which are both viruses which cause fever when kids get the actual disease, it may cause a fever - and possibly swelling at the injection site.
