There was a programme on a while back, where some scientist said that the media had built Hawking out of proportion (typical of what they do, either praising someone to the heavens or trying to demolish them). He said that Hawking wouldn't rate in the top 10 (or was it 20?).
At the end of the day, he is very clever, and given his limitations, perhaps the best in a way.

Stephen Hawkings has a sparkling intellect . His genius is evident when one reads his books titled , "a brief history of time "and "the universe in a nutshell". It was only Hawkings who managed to scientifically elucidate to laymen the idea of a universe with no beginning or an end in time .

Hawkings has not won the nobel prize only because his theories have not yet been proved and that is a pity

Hawkings is special because of his depth of understanding in the realms of comology ..

Hawkings has infact unconsciously brought the question about the origin of the universe within the realms of science from the realms of religion.

The Nobel 'peace' prize was created by the same person who made Nobel gunpowder. Why should the value of a person be rated on this supposed accolade? Stephen Hawking is a very great theoretical physicist, and even if not all his theories prove to be correct his name will doubtless be remembered for his pionering work, unlike most of the rest of us.

You mean the same guy all this is about??
great...??....him??!!.....*cough cough*

Stephen William Hawking (born 8 January 1942) CH, CBE, FRS, is considered one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton), and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

Hawking's principal fields of research are theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. In 1971, in collaboration with Sir Roger Penrose, he proved the first of many singularity theorems; such theorems provide a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a singularity in space-time. This work showed that, far from being mathematical curiosities which appear only in special cases, singularities are a fairly generic feature of general relativity.

Hawking also suggested that, after the Big Bang, primordial or mini black holes were formed. With Bardeen and Carter, he proposed the four Laws of black hole mechanics, drawing an analogy with thermodynamics. In 1974, he calculated that black holes should thermally create and emit subatomic particles, known as Hawking radiation, until they exhaust their energy and evaporate.

In collaboration with Jim Hartle, Hawking developed a model in which the Universe had no boundary in space-time, replacing the initial singularity of the classical Big Bang models with a region akin to the North pole; while one cannot travel North of the North pole, there is no boundary there. While originally the no-boundary proposal predicted a closed Universe, discussions with Neil Turok led to the realization that the no-boundary proposal is consistent with a Universe which is not closed also.

AND DID YOU MENTION A NOBEL??
HE'S ALREADY WON ALL THESE....!!!!
1975 Eddington Medal
1976 Hughes Medal of the Royal Society
1979 Albert Einstein Medal

1986 Member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences
1988 Wolf Prize in Physics
1989 Prince of Asturias Awards in Concord
1999 [6] Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize of the American Physical Society
2003 Michelson Morley Award of Case Western Reserve University

How many great man and woman came and gone without wining a prize .the list goes on and on
I got nothing against people who won the Nobel prize..
but it is given out at random .likes to people who spent
time in prison .people in the Communist party.some body
just for writing a book..and it goes on ..Stephen hawking's
is far far more educated person than those who won the prize..I think its all a big hype it is really a political issue

Considered one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists of 20th-century Earth, Stephen William Hawking developed a quantum theory of gravity, in which he sought to link the two major theories of physics: quantum mechanics and relativity. Hawking also speculated on the existence of wormholes and quantum fluctuations linking multiple universes. Hawking's scientific achievements were all the more remarkable because he was afflicted with a debilitating neural disease that kept him confined to a wheelchair, able to speak only with the aid of a speech-synthesis computer. Commander Data devised a holodeck program that allowed him to play poker with Dr. Hawking, Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton.

Here's what great about Stephen Hawking:
He has not only guested in Star Trek, the Next Generation, but also appeared in an episodes of The Simpsons, Futurama, and a Pink Floyd song.

Beat that!

the nobel prize is far over rated. It's like saying a film is not good because it hasn't won an oscar.
Whatever!

Despite his crushing handicap, he's done important work in general relativity/cosmology, and his best know work - identifying a mechanism by which black holes gradually evaporate (Hawking radiation) - brought quantum mechanics and gravity into play in the same problem. Uniting these characters via formation of a quantum theory of gravity is a big hurdle blocking development of a so-called Theory of Everything.

But he ain't no A.E.
