i know its only a film, what i meant was, if you have seen it, its sort of left open at the end to decide wether he is still in that institute asleep and dreaming or did he really break out of the chair at the beginning. im not the one being stupid here !!!!!

The end bit of him saving Mars happened. The bit with him going to the dream place didn't work as it triggered off memories that the powers that be had tried to erase from his head and replace with false memories (the wife and job etc). The people at the dream clinic did not know his memories had already been tampered with, so when it went wrong, they didn't know what to do. He started going mad and broke free. He was then confused for a while as to what was real and what wasn't, where the memories of Mars came from as he didn't remember being there. Eventually, it all became clear (with the help of the woman) and together, they save Mars. I think he knew how to do it before, which is what "they" had tried to erase from his mind and make him believe he had never been!

The point is that it's ambiguous. The movie is constructed in such a way that it's completely possible that it could be a dream. That's the hook you're not told because it makes for a more interesting ending and discussion afterward.

The character didn't dream it. But a better question would be, did he pick the right self? He could really have been the jerk guy and not the nice one who saved the planet.

when he is on Mars at the end and it stars to terraform his eyes start to pop out of his head and then pop back in again and he is fine. Laws of physics state that this just would not happen so can't be real.

I think it was a movie so it didn't really happen - jk. Actually I think the final memories with him actually saving Mars was not a dream and was reality.

I'd like to think that it really happened (in the movie, of course). It would kind of suck if it was a dream.
