The first museum was the British Museum in London, which was founded in 1753 and opened to the public in 1759, although you had to buy a ticket to get in.
The first truly 'free' public museum was the Louvre Museum in Paris, it opened in 1793
The 'museum' in Florence, Italy was really not a museum it's name is Accademia dell'Arte del Disengno which translates to Academy of the Art of Design, pretty much an art school founded in 1561, it's name now is Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze = Academy of Fine Arts, Florence. At the time of its inception, it was not a public building, but a private art school. The painting and statues were there to help the students fine tune their skills.
The Ashmolean Museum was not a public museum, it was a university museum and was intended to be used as study materials for the students.
