There is some concern about mercury in fish while pregnant. Generally the rule is the larger the fish, the more mercury it's likely to have because big fish eat smaller fish who have eaten tiny fish who have eaten really teeny fish, etc.
I believe the recommendation is to avoid large fish like swordfish and not to eat fish more than 2-3 times a week (including tuna fish).

All types of fish contain some amounts of mercury. For most people this is not a cause for concern, but a build-up in the blood stream can lead to reproductive problems in women and affect the development of the nervous system in children.
There is a growing body of evidence that the omega-3 fatty acids in seafood like canned tuna are associated with good heart health, optimal brain function and cognition, improved eye and skin health, and protection against certain cancers, according to scientific studies.
But stay away from shellfish while pregnant! They have higher levels of mercury, and they are all scavengers, they live on the bottom of the ocean, eating rotting carcasses... would you want that getting to your unborn child?

I did when I was pregnant 14 years ago but I have heard recently midwifes discourage the eating of tuna. I believe it is something to do with the oils.

My midwife advised me that it is ok but to limit my intake of tuna and other oily fish to around two tins a week, due to an increase in mercury levels!

wouldn't that be a little unfair to all the little unborn tuna babies if you ate their mom before they even had the chance to swim free?
