Wal-Mart is in huge trouble for various practices from not providing healthcare to cheating employees out of pay. There are currently a number of class action lawsuits pending against them in states all over the US. Wal-Mart's sales have actually started to show a decline, and their stock has been going down because of all the bad publicity. Consequently, Wal-Mart hired a large advertising firm to help them boost their image. They spent $640M (yes, that's millions) in the second half of this year alone to try and spruce up their image. The first roll-out came at the beginning of summer, and used half of the above mentioned sum, and the second roll-out is going on right now. One of the things they were advised to do was go green, to win points with health and environment conscious consumers. So that's why they are doing it.

The pros are that if you still shop at Wal-Mart (I personally do not, and if they are the only store in town that carries something I want, I do without) you will be offered "earth friendly" packaging and organic foods for a slightly higher cost. The cons of it is that it is not being done for the right reason, it is being done as a publicity tool and to help spruce up their image. One of the things I was told recently is that part of their going organic campaign involves buying from local growers. However, my friend's son works at a Wal-Mart grocery department, and he told me recently that when they unload produce, they put it all in boxes marked "Grown in Utah", even if the truck just came in from California. So go figure...

I don't all the pros and cons, but Wal-Mart will do it because there are consumers willing to spend money on it.

I suspect because they have already been criticized for so many different policies, from store locations to underpaying employees. They need to head off potential criticism that as the largest retailer and biggest employer in the country, they don't care about the environment.

I imagine a tiny portion of walmart will be organic because there is a demand. If we (the market) demands, they supply.
