I would like James Patterson to write a story with a good, satisfying ending where the hero won after a difficult battle with the bad guys. Almost all of James Patterson's novels are great (or at least good) but some of his novels have a cliffhanger ending (like The Big Bad Wolf, where the main bad guy has not been caught after all that Alex Cross has been through) or a simple ending (like London Bridges where the main bad guy died in a simple way without any "grand" fight with Alex Cross when in the story, it shows that the bad guy is witty and very difficult to catch)

Most of my favourite authors are dead (Joseph Conrad, Thomas Mann, William Faulkner, etc.) - no use asking them anyway. But I'd like to read an American Gothic novel written by either John Updike, Philip Roth, or Richard Powers and see how much they would contribute to the genre. Maybe they'd revive the great tradition of E.A. Poe or Charles Brockden Brown.

If it was sci-fi/fantasy I would go to Baen's Books. Sign up to their website, go to the chat room or the Bar and ask the author personally. Same for military sci-fi and/or sci-fi/fantasy adventure.

It would be a creepy horribly disturbing bedtime story by Neil Gaiman. ("Don't Ask Jack" is verrrry close.)
