Today what society classes as poor is not really poor.
The so called poor drive cars, buy take away meals, own a television and a computer, smoke, drink alcohol on goes the list..
Poor is when people do not have a roof over their head and they are eating mud and grass to stave off hunger.
If they fall into the latter category help them to get on their own feet.
Maybe buy them some seeds so they can grow their own vegetables this would be a good start .
Motivating them to take control of their own lives.
Handouts long term do not help the person.
If the person was stuck in a situation and I could see they genuinely needed help I would hand them the money .
If a person was hungry I would buy them something to eat and to drink.

to convert the /semirich/urban/rich/middle class/influential/ honest /successful/ people in the society to start thinking about the society they are surrounded by. eg. in any city, town or village there are poor people also are dwelling with the above people. society is consisting of the below poverty line also, every citizen should think of doing some good to the people who have been a part of his domicile right from his birth.
they need not offer anything to the poor in the form of money, but they have to accept them also as a part of society. this beginning itself will do a lot of good to the below poverty line people.
this will make them consciously fair at heart towards the society. also they will start to provide as far as possible employments which will upgrade the society, they'll all understand their small service will be received and acknowledged by the society as a whole and reciprocated on a later day by the underprivileged before the end of their lifetime.

First of all, this person may not want your help. Every thought of that? Maybe they are happy the way things are. If they do want your help, have heard the expression "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, TEACH a man to fish and he can eat for a life time." Some homeless people I know don't want to be helped. They CHOSE that life and they are happy. So don't jump to conclusion just because you THINK they aren't happy or that they need help.

actually, i don't think that is a good idea. they are like ducks and dogs. once you hand out some food, they come back for more and it's almost impossible saying no without being mean. i am serious, been there done that! they become complete moochers and yes, at first they respect you and are very kind. but then, they start taking advantage of you and start to impose.

don't let them bring you down with them. b/c all they care about right now, is themselves. I'm not trying to be rude. but they are thinking that you've got it made. you need to keep them in line and tell them it takes HARD work to get where you are and that they can't expect things to come easy. just don't let them take advantage of you. THAT'S the hard part.

The best way, I think, that you can help the poor is by helping the agencies that help them. You can donate your time for example by passing out sandwiches and juice. You can offer them small jobs to do around the house. As for the people standing on a corner asking for help beware! Some are not poor but want you to think so and give them money.

Many poor people don't have the wisdom of how to manage their own finances.
To give money freely will only help temporarily.
Teach them a skill or pay for their education.
Take them to an employment adivsory body.
Poor people are disillusioned by the fact that they are losers.
Give them courage.
Let them find god.
It will help at long last.

As the expression goes. give a poor man a fish and he can eat for the day, teach him to fish and he can eat for a lifetime. What this means is that the more a person learns the more likely he is to get out of poverty. Education!

I pass this one homeless lady everyday and there are three things I do for her when I can. One I give her my lunch because I feel she could use it more than I can. Two, I go through my closet and what ever doesn't fit or I haven't worn in a while I tell give to her. If it doesn't fit her I tell her to pass it on to a friend. Three, I talk to her. I am not saying this to toot my own horn, but there are things that are better than money and time is one of them.

By making him capable of earning his bread by himself. Offering one time meal, giving away a piece of cloth, putting the poor in a house and feeding them by NGOs or Government organisations is only a dis-service to this people. Every one has to be made capable of earning their own bread and all should have opportunities to work and earn their bread. Of course, the mentally retarded and 100% disables needed to be looked after. I strongly feel that we sould not give alms to any one. Show them a way to earn their bread and offer the same if we can.
