The pearl necklaces I own and have seen for sale have a (usally ornate) clasp that pushes and clicks into place instead of the usual ring type.

Real pearls are heavier and costlier, which is why the clasp needs to be more secure. You can tell if the pearls are real or not (or of better quality) just by looking at how it was stranded. Necklaces with good pearls are usually made by strong multi-strand fibers and individually knotted (there is a secure knot between each pearl to prevent lost pearls in case the strand broke). The clasp is usually made of silver/gold-plated goldfish hooks. The modern version may use strong tiger tail wires.

I always thought pearls looked great with antique clasps.

I think traditionally Pearl necklaces had a better, more secure clasp because of the fact that pearls are more expensive.

the pearl necklacei own has another type of clasp altogether, it sort of hooks togethers. Maybe its because pearls are heavier and larger than most necklaces so funtion better without the standard type of clasp, i dont really know sorry
