If you go for an LCD monitor ensure that the response time is 6ms or less, otherwise you get ghosting on graphic intensive tasks. Try an Intel Extreme Edition processor (3GHz. +,maybe even the 955 Cedar Mill) or Athlon 64 FX processor(FX-60 onward are very good) coupled with sufficient RAM. The thing about RAM is that if you have it fast enough you don't need lots, infact if you get lots of slow RAM it might actually slow down your system. So get DDR2 533MHz or preferably 667MHz+ modules (that is for a 2GB setup two modules of 1GB)in dual channel mode. A well-performing hard drive would also do wonders, I like the Western Digital SE16 and RaptorX as well as the Samsung models, Maxtors and Hitachis are acceptable too. Just make sure the motor is about 7,200RPM, settle for nothing less and go for SATA connectivity(SCSI is good too but very expensive generally). Then comes the motherboard, which should be (for an Intel setup)a 965 or 975 Intel chipset based rig or an nVidia 570 or 590 (SLI or normal) "for Intel" chipset based rig.
For an AMD setup an nVidia N-Force chipset based board will give the best performance. Makers like Foxconn and Gigabyte provide quality boards with a few extra features.
Which brings us to the most important component the graphics card. You can go for an SLI setup (or Crossfire with an ATi card) or a single card. With ATi a 1600X or higher GPU is recommended, with nVidia it's 7600GTX or higher for the best performance.
Also the AMD X2 processors and nVidia GX2 dual GPU rigs are worth a look at too.

Usually the system with more computing power and memory are best for graphics and animations, I would recommend you going for latest pentium with 4 GB ram if you have much graphic stuff to do or animation stuff or else you can have a good mac purely for this purpose.
