It is an aircraft propeller of indeterminite age. It has some nicks, scratches and gouges, but is mostly smooth. I would like to understand how to grind, sand, and polish it to a mirror finish for display in my home.

If it is too involved to do in a reasonable period of time, I am interested in hearing recommendations for someone to do it for me in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Here is a partial picture of part of it:

I would suggest contacting the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh Wisconsin.I've been to there museum many times and have watched them restore a number of aircraft pieces. I'm sure they could suggest an easy method of cleaning your propeller. I've added the link here. As far as polihing it I've had good luck using fine steel wool and a mixture 1 part kerosine to to 1 part 10 weight motor oil on aluminum. Give it a try it might save you some money. Good Luck

Aircraft Aluminum Polish

First get a oxidizer and follow the directions. Then get the best aluminum polish you can find, a box of rags then get to work. Or you could get a bench grinder with a polishing wheel, some polishing rouge and buff away. But unless you're set up to polish and know the right way to do it you're better off taking it to a polishing shop. It would probably cost about $100.00 to get it done. I live in Orange County Ca or I'd take the job. I can make aluminum shine like a diamond in a pigs azz. Or a ruby in a goats azz. Whichever is shinier. Good luck

A good spray on/hose of aluminum conditioner will clean it up nice. You don't want to "polish" it too much though, believe it or not there are DNR laws against "too much" glare [ I'm picturing you polishing it to a chrome-like finish, which I'm sure you aren't talking about].

Take it to a machine and shop pay $50 and have it sand blasted, for another $100-$175 you should be able to have it powder coated

just get a bench grinder a muslin wheel and some tripoli, remove the raised nicks with file and buff that sucker till your fingers are burned up, it will shine like a diamond in a goats butt!
