What I do is record the phone number. Then look up the number on the Internet. If it's an individual it will give a name and address if you look in the right place. If the house is close (as it was in my case) do a quick drive by of the house to get a look at it. The next time they call tell them that you know about (persons name) living in the (describe home and street address) and if they ever call again you will be paying them a little visit sometime after the sun goes down. They never bothered me again.

Luckily I am ex-directory so I don't get all those calls at home - however, we get them constantly at work, 1 company called up 6 times within a week - it is so irritating. I think it is the worst way to sell a service to people, invasive and rude. Do these companies ever realise people don't want to spend 10 minutes on the phone listening to some fool ramble on about a service they don't even want?

YES!! it is normally a computer generated call that apparently rings upto 10 phones at the same time and what ever call is answered first then the other calls are dropped. now if i answer the phone and if no one says hello within a second i put the phone down.

We used to if you live in the UK you can sign up for a scheme called the Telephone Preference Sevice this stops them after about 1-2 months you will get nearly no calls like this.
And it gives you an excuse to shout at telesales people

Its a computer checking your phone number to be followed by someone calling you from a call centre in India to sell you something you dont need or want (eg a conservatory for yout third floor flat).
Subscribe for free to the "Telephone Preference Service" to stop this if you are in the UK. They can be reported and fined if they violate your privacy again.
If it is a real caller, then call customer services for your phone provider for a trace to see who it is and inform the police.

You can register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which will block unwanted sales calles. If people persist in harrassing you, you can lodge a complaint against them. I did this as I was sick of getting calls, like you. I don't get any now. Good luck!

Yes, I used to get them a lot. It is known as "cold-callers", where companies ring numerous telephone numbers in one go - the 1st person that answers gets the company (usually double glazing etc), the rest of us get a silence at the end of the line. Extremely irritating - especially if you wotk nights like me!

Most of the above is correct......but the reason nobody answers is the call is being dialled by a machine, and sometimes when a successful connection is made, there are no available operators at the dialling company to respond to you.
