there are eight planets: mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, and neptune.

pluto and charon are considered a binary system. pluto, charon, ceres, and 2003 UB313 are not a planets, but they orbit the sun, are round, do not have an isolated orbit (a bunch of other similar bodies have similar orbits.), and are not satellites so they are dwarf planets (see above link). this does not change anything about the solar system. it just corrects the mistake of classifying pluto as a planet initially.
i have been waiting for this since i was about twelve. i feel somewhat satisfied. i knew that pluto didn't fit the pattern set by the major bodies in the solar system so it was an anomaly. it just felt illogical and "out of place". this was the right thing to do, believe me. i don't understand why so many are having such a problem with this.
i don't know how long this will drag on tho. many planetary scientists are not satisfied that the definition is not rigorous enough.

not so quick.
firstly the international astronomical union held a conference to vote on this topis. Ceres, Charon and UB-313 (Xena) have been voted as dwarf planets. Ceres is the largest asteroid, Charon the moon of pluto and UB-313 is a newly discovered body. Pluto has been demoted from the status of a planet.

those 3 candidates were : Ceres, Charon, and 'Xena'.
but ... today's SOL planets = 8, right? pluto's not a member of this exclusive family anymore.

that's "ceres", "charon", n UB2003 i suppose there are now at present 11 planets in the satellite. coz pluto is removed n three are added so it's 11 in total.

Your question is wrong. No new planets are added in IAU's database, rather pluto is stripped from its planetary status.
