Have a look at the Thesaurus, it states the Militia stands for: The armed force, Private Army, Band of soldiers. etc.

Militia's that I know of are: Groups of citizens who guard against corruption and tyranny and are willing to give their lives in defense of our constitutional rights be it from foreign or domestic invasion.

(i.e. these are not regular/ professional soldiers)
