Jay, I grasp your point. It is true, and reminds me of a very useful prayer...
"Oh Lord, keep my words soft and sweet, for tomorrow I may have to eat them."
Cheers.

there is PREjudice and there is Intelligent, factually-based judgment. I mean, producing companies all-over the world decide if they should launch a product based on the mindset of the majority. They gauge the mindset of many. They judge. Are they going to hell? I surely hope not. Productivity surely isn't a sin, is it? Take the Reality Show Survivor as another example. It sure is an awful judgment of human nature but it sells anyway. But Is it a sin? (partly think it is but mainly no). But whose fault is it? the producers (Jerry Bruckheimer) or the players themselves? the producers surely don't have a hold on the players and they still choose the necessary evil. anyway, we are going off the topic.
The question is, What makes people judge others?
I'll start with myself. why do i judge? primarily for self-preservation. it all stems from there. any first encounter, i would judge an individual based on how they look, what they say, and what they do. if i find them wanting or differ greatly in the values that i uphold, i stay away from them. But does that make me evil? is it not a greater sin to be WITH them and eventually be LIKE them in the end?
Every individual has a limit to his strength of character and values. Yes, we should help others in as many ways as we can but we can't save the world. We should gauge our capabilities and gauge the fault that we want to correct in others. If we are not strong enough, and we don't have enough courage, i think it is better to stay clear of that individual.
Now, to the "indulge in talking ill of others". how does this exactly happen? we only talk ill of others after a previous not so pleasant and probably a lot of major differences to the person we are talking ill of. And if we talk ill of others, we go again to the question, why do judge others? why do we talk ill of them? because of differences. you found something not likeable about the other person or he pushed a very sensitive button.
am i going to hell? the God i believe in is compassionate and merciful among others. He wants me to be righteous, not perfect. He understands my being human and my efferts to overcome the obstacles that come with it.

The real peace can be achieved when we do not judge others and find faults with them always. There are 2 immediate advantages we get by being like this: First not loosing the person from our friends' list, second by pricking others ego, we are provoking them to say something about us, which can be avoided.
This is true that every human being thinks uniformly and only in reacting they differ from person to person. When he is quick in reacting, he is termed as short-tempered and when takes long time to react is termed saint.
There is an interesting saying in Tamil, which goes like this: " When you cannot see your back yourself, why do you bother about others' back?"
Lets try to live with harmony by allowing others also to lead the equal way of living. THE REAL JOY IS ALLOWING OTHERS TO BE JOYFUL.

Do you belive in credibility does matter in your life?? If yes then you read further.
Practising 'fault finding ' in others is defiently not a good idea.
Life is like echo, whatever you gives to it , definetly reflects.
When you practising this things, world see ypou as negative minded people, negetivity about you builds further in people's mind.
In end you loss your credibility because you always talk about ' fault' never talk ablout ' how to solve problem'
Instead of derive fault in others , if you take approach of giving your proper help to solve problem then it gives you tag of 'responsible' and 'credible ' person
If you do mistake then simply take it on yourself only.. do not derive excuse or blaming others. This practise really works like magic at your work place also

Sai Baba say that, the person upon whom the ills are talked, should thank the person who is telling all those ills, becuse just like a pig which enjoys very much eating the shits of man, the ill talker cleanses the sins of the other one with his tongue.
Story of Pakkanar and Kali in "Parayi pettu panthirukulam" seen in ' Ithihyamaala ' written by the famous writer of Kerala Sri. " Kottarathil Sankunni " also vindicates that saying.
luv and SAI RAM,

It's difficult for us not to judge, it's part of human nature. I like having an optimistic view of the world, i like to think that we all aren't going straight to hell. We get what we deserve. KARMA. embrace that. But hey they can't just let anyone into heaven. It would completely rule out the theory of heaven and hell, if everyone automatically goes to heaven won't it.

It's not practical at all.. if you don't judge others, who's going to carry all the blame for failure?? the individual?? it would be simply unbearable.. imagine a boss not judging?? an administrator?? a priest not accusing his flock of having sinned?? what kind of world would that be??

Certain things are humanly impossible, such as the one you have mentioned. Even the prophets of God could hardly fulfil them. They are mere utopian things we should aspire to attain. God is too merciful and understanding to judge us over them by a standard of 100%.

The problem with 'talking ill of others' is that your mental motivation is not in helping that person. Your mental motivation is of being separate and better than that person. For that reason you should never talk ill of others since it creates an illusion in your perception of reality.
