I woke up, and I went to school at the University of Texas at Austin. Strolling to class, one of the construction workers nearby suddenly turned up the volume on the radio, and I heard the news report that a plane had just struck the WTC. Seconds later, they reported that a plane had struck the next tower. For 5, maybe 10 minutes, I stood there, with a slowly gathering crowd mesmerized at the news. It was unworldly. Then, I realized the time, and went to class, because of course, I knew that professors were too stupid to realize that this news was just a wee bit more important than going to class for the rest of the day, and school doesn't wait for anything. I kept expecting class to be cancelled, since the 2nd largest university in the USA seemed to be a highly likely target, but my university president, Larry Faulkner, was also too stupid to realize this, so it was not shut down. Ridiculous really. I went to the rest of my classes, and it was pretty much all anyone talked about for the rest of the day. A few phone calls confirmed that noone I knew well had died, although a few friends of a friends seemed to have gone that way. I spent the next two weeks watching hours of television every day, which was odd since I watched TV so little that I had neither cable, satellite, or even an antenna (My two apartment mates and I jury-rigged aluminum foil to act as an antenna after the first few hours. I even skipped an entire week of class.
Interestingly, one of my more reclusive friends managed to not discover the news for over two days after it happened, despite going to class every day and having about 4 people he lived with himself at the time.

I got up at about 5:30 a.m. (I'm in California) and I work from home sometimes and I put the television on. I never watch CNN but for some reason I just put it on. They first reported it as a fire and I'll never forget them reporting and all of a sudden the second plane hit the building and I was shocked. Katie Couric kept saying it was some kind of explosion and then I switched back to CNN and they slowed the film. It was pure madness and chaos. I actually recorded the events on my vcr and will never forget it. I called my parents and they were shocked at what was happening as well. A tragic day.
My uncle owns a business at the North twin tower and thank God everyone got out alive.

Yikes, my car engine overheated and started burning on the morning of moving day, and I was totally stressed out at the car rental place trying to get a rental & get back home to finish packing before the movers arrived. Thought I was having a bad day.
While standing at the counter, saw the second plane the tower hit in real time, but thought it was a movie. I asked the clerk what movie that was, and he said not a movie, it's the news. He turned around & we stood there in disbelief, initially still hoping it was a movie trailer. But not.
After that, the burnt car engine didn't seem like such a calamity after all.

Working at a newspaper that had just gone to be printed, trying deperately to change the front page, get relevant local and accurate information to put on our pages. It was good to be busy, I think, because it allowed it to kind of sink in more slowly, and kept me from being saturated with watching the TV all day.

I was at college. I only learnt about what happened in the late afternoon, and since I had no TV, I only understood it when the next day I bought a newspaper.
