I'm an 18 year old Englishman who has lived in the US now for 8 years, and I have heard some stupid things in my time here, and I decided to ask, is it just the stereotypes that are on TV that get regurgitated at me everyday, or do you really think that all English people have Tea Time and drink Tea and eat Crumpets and say 'Bloody Hell' a lot(I'm not saying some don't...). Please, fill me in.

That should have been wear....I feel silly now. And Doesn't it ever bother you that American have such bizarre views that are almost impossible to change?

2006-09-10 20:15:10 · update #2

But the thing that bothers me about it most, is that when I try and change the stereotypes, people don't/won't believe that I am English. Or they'll believe I was brought to the US really young and so am not really English.

And I will admit, there were a few stereotypes about Americans, but that's only because we get American shows over there like 'Boy meets World' 'Saved by the Bell' and that sort of thing.

Someone has their pants in a bunch. I'm not going to apologize for something that I had no actual part in, big_e_40, nor will I request that you make up your own sodding language, because it might be a little bit too challenging for you. I will however request that you cease and desist using phrases that died in England before I was born. Cheers, and Now go and Bugger off.

It's somewhat true. English people don't often have Ice in their soda. Another thing that might startle you is that Free Refills on Soda are virtually non-existent and it's more expensive to begin with.

Not a whole lot besides what the media and traditional stereotypes feed them. I don't know a lot about the English either, but I'm not naive enough to think the way some do.
American's don't know a lot about most everything-besides themselves, though they think they know it all. As a whole, we're sadly uneducated about our OWN country, so don't take it personally that we don't know a lot about yours.

Yes, my country's f*cked up, and I'll be one of the first to admit it, but let's not be rude here, people.

I am british and i know what you mean about everyone thinking we drink tea, play polo or cricket, get pissed all the time, have bad teeth, all love football, talk posh, they don't understand we have a class system in the country so what we're like usually depends on whether we have money or not. I got asked once by an american if the queen was real! and whether we say chips in our country, it's just ignorance i guess not just in america but everywhere incl england. We only believe what we see on t.v or hear about. People don't really eat crumpets or say "bloody hell" anymore anyway, oh how times have changed!

no, you're right- most American's heads are full of strange ideas about other countries, mine included. For me, I just think of the English as dry humored and sanguine- I'm probably as wrong as anybody. However, I'm sure English folks have some strange ideas about us too.

But basically you're right- we mainly have a mishmash of stereotypes bouncing around up there.

I've heard any number of equally silly questions about the U.S. from people of different nationalities. Which goes to show that we're all prone to believing what we see and hear in the media, no matter which side of the pond we're on.

Tell you what -- you don't ask me if Chicago is still full of gangsters, and I won't ask if everyone in London plays cricket.

Haha I agree with Valley chick - tho a lot of americans are just too ignorant to know what goes on outside their f*cked up country. People have asked me if we have crocodiles & koalas as pets.
Yes we do, oh and its all true what they say - we so do ride kangaroos to work.

Crazy mate :)

I was told when you went out to eat and ask for a coke it doesn't have ice in it..

When you ask for ice they bring you about two ice cubes......
