Wow, people have some really expensive ideas about what is wrong with your car. This is the way you should proceed from least expensive to most expensive.
Are you using the proper octane gas in your car? If the octane is too low, that will cause the engine to mis-fire. Read your owner's manual and find out.
When was the last time the valves were adjusted? Some cars need periodic adjustment of the valves. Find out if your car is one of them, check your owner's manual or ask your mechanic.
Maybe the fuel filter is clogged. When was the last time it was replaced?
Have your distributor cap (if you have a distributor) and spark plug wires examined by a mechanic.
When was the last time the spark plugs were replaced?
Maybe the crankcase sensor is bad.
Are you starting to see my point here? It could be a lot of things including the expensive things some of the previous answers suggested.
It would help to know what year, make and model your car is. :|

If its not been serviced, it'll probably just be the cost of new spark/glow plugs (normally average around £8 each) and the rest of the servicing kit (price dependant on car)
Could be a broken down lead too, best to have someone who really knows look at it
If you lived near us, it wouldn't cost you a lot as my hubby is self-employed and has never had one complaint, the majority of people he does work for are either repeat customers, or recommended to him. And he doesn't charge enough in my opinion!

it coulb be the ht leads breaking down if your car has spark plugs
easy way to check is have the car running and with a pair of gloves on to avoid a shock take one lead of at a time and see if there is a change in the running if yes replace that lead
good luck

why dont you replace the plugs, change the dist.cap(if you got one)check your plug wires and also something most people dont do which they should is have someone clean out the throttle body.if it gets dirty it wont run very good either.if you get someone rather then the garage ,it wont cost near that much.

Probebly electrical, maybe not as bad as what others are saying, could just need the timing set, take it to a mechanic and tell them you just want to know whats wrong with it.

Anything from nothing to a hell of a lot.
Check leads, plugs, distributor, fuel injectors, cylinder pressure etc.
If its a loose lead.......plug it back, if your head gasket has gone, open your wallet
