HOW ABOUT AN AXE? MAYBE A SPLITTING MAUL. A WEDGE AND A SLEDGE HAMMER. I WOULD BET THEY HAVE THOSE HYDRALIC SPLITTING MACHINES THERE IN GERMANY TOO.
ALL OF THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS WORK AND WORK WELL, THEIR USE IS DICTATED BY THE AMOUNT OF WORK TO BE DONE. I PERSONALLY HAVE SPLIT AND ENTIRE CORD OF WOOD WITH A SPLITTING MAUL MANY TIMES AND FOUND IT TO BE QUITE EFFECTIVE.

I'm a bit confused... These logs you want to spit---are they small enough to fit in your mouth? Then wouldn't they be "sticks" rather than "logs"? (Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought logs had to be a certain minimum size.)
