There are so many reasons given for it but I know a family who have three members of their family grinding their teeth when asleep and they are okay- so it can't be stress as a factor in all three cases. No one yet knows the exact cause , but dentists can usually detect it if the cause is from the teeth.
Here are some causes:
1. Tension/ Stress.
2.Dental: teeth not closing together comfortably.
3.Dreaming

I know a guy that screams in his sleep so dont feel bad. I use to move alot during sleep and would lay on my hand or arm and injure it, I would even fall out of bed sometimes. I also would grind my teeth so hard my mouth would hurt for days, I also had the habit of chewing and my inside cheeks would be all ripped up. The best way to change sleep patterns is diet and exercise, a glass of wine or a shot of whiskey right before sleep can help you be less active during sleep. This site might help.

First. See your dentist for a special rubber cap to put on your teeth. The cap is small and will help protect your teeth and jaw.
It might be stress, diet or number of other possible causes. And there might not be anything you can do to stop it. I know of an yogi who live with the condition his whole life, even with fairly calm temper, clean diet, routine, excercise etc.

i have the same problem. i looked into it, and there is the obvious answer to wear a mouth guard. i tried that, and it made my teeth feel weird in the morning. the book that i read about it suggested chewing gum or doing facial exercises to strengthen the muscles. that also didnt work. good luck with that one!
on the talking thing. not much you can do about that. i guess just hope that you dont blurt out anything embarrasing!

you need a bite guard...you dentist should point you in the right direction. It's a common problem, but you can develop greater problems in your teeth- grinding down the enamel. Can't help you with the talking though- you are just dreamin'

go ask your dentist for a mouth piece that is designed just for that reason you only use it when you go to sleep. or if you don't like the dentist you could try some wax ut just make sure that the was is pressed on to the teeth well so there is no risk of chocking.

a lot of people do that in thier sleep. sometimes i wake up and my mouth will hurt really bad. The dentist told me to get a mouth guard and wear it in my sleep. however, you can get them from places other than the dentist.

I've heard of this problem, and I think it's genetic. They sell guards to keep you from doing damage to your teeth. Check yt your drugstore or ask your dentist.
