First off, you need to remember that the whites did not enslave the blacks. They bought them from other blacks in Africa who had enslaved them in wars and slave raids. Second, there is no excuse for the mistreatment of any single race. Third, America has stood for freedom. You are free to worship who you will, and say what you wish. The problem with that is that you will always have ignorant people who choose to exercise those rights against better judgement. I am white and I have experienced racism. I lived in Mexico for 6 months during which I was discriminated against for being white. I have had blacks use racial slurs towards me. So blacks do not have a sole proprietorship on the recieving end of racism. In Africa, there are still tribal wars, genocide, religious persecution, mass murders, tyranny, and many more atrocities. So when you celebrate the 4th of July you are celebrating the birth of a nation that has freed you from such things. Until people learn how to love one another and seek knowledge instead of wallowing in ignorance you will always have racism, sexism, antisemitism, and other such persecutions.

Reading that was extremely depressing. This is how far we've come after ALL this time ?? Your only going to condemn America for the purchase of slaves.... why not blame Africa for the SALE of the slaves. Yes it was an AWFUL thing, but how productive are you being by living in the past. If people hate America and what it stands for, why still live here ?...and I am sorry, but EVERYONE experiences racism...and thinking like this does not or will not ever help us get past that.

Because THEY should. And YOU shouldn't. You should be packing to go where ever it is you are moving to being you feel so badly towards the U.S. The question is 'why do lack people!?, but it should be why do some black people. Finish it with why do some black people disrespect the U.S. and complain so much, yet wave Africa in our faces. If you had any sense Africa should be the ones you hate as they sold the majority of slaves to the New Americans. Grow up and act like you belong or go where you fell you must. Heal my child.

Were you involved in slavery?
Were you put to the cotton fields?
Did you work on a plantation?
Were you sold as a maid to a white family?
Were you abused when you didn't work hard?
No? Well..
Do you eat well?
Do you eat what you want?
Do you have a roof over your head?
Do you realize you used your Amendment Rights for Freedom of Speech?
Do you sleep on a warm bed?
Do you have a job that pays more than 6 cents a day?
Yes?
Then you're an American, and THAT is why you should stand up for the flag.

I have a theory. America is not rednecks, it's not christianity, it's not war mongering, it's not peace keeping, it's not diversity, it's not understanding, it's not history, it's not future, it's not gays, it's not straights, it's not George Bush, and it's not John Kerry.
America is change, in the past 200 years we have gone from puritanical sadists to the pixilated canvas of rednecks, scholars, criminals, hippies, hics, barbies, nerds, and wierdos that we are today.
The phrase "un-American" is redundant, wanting something different is the perfect example of Americana, what are you proving by not showing your support for this wobbly little doe of a country? What do you want, times have changed, 4th of July is not a day of rememberance but a day to show support for the country you love, whether you hate it or not.

Truthfully, no one is telling you to do anything. But, regardless of what mistakes happened in the past, if you think there's a better country somewhere else, no one will hold you or prevent you from going there.
I am the first to find fault in many of the things that this country does that is wrong and bad... and has done in the past that was wrong and was bad, too. However, not each and every Black or Brown or Hispanic person can find the freedoms, liberties and rights we are guaranteed here. Yes, some segments of society have kept us from enjoying the same things throughout history, but the fault is not in the country but those people who claim to believe in freedom, liberty, rights, justice... and kneel and pray to a forgiving, merciful, loving God that tells them to love others... THOSE hypocrites are at fault, not the country!
The fault does not lie in our country but a certain portion of people. This is the only country where we are have so many rights and liberties and freedoms... to an education, to live wherever we want (and can afford), to be treated fairly (that's why we have laws and a Constitution), where no one can come in at night in the name of the government and tell you what to do in your home (except, do not disturb your neighbors... or abuse children or a spouse or manufacture drugs for selling... you pretty much know what I mean) and house troops against your wishes, or openly abuse you or penalize you for your religious or political beliefs, or for expressing your views in public or believing whatever god or religion... this ain't that bad a country in spite of all the faults we have... especially when compared to other countries (why do you think so many people want to come here... and cross borders illegally?) Perhaps you take too much for granted...? Perhaps you may want to visit some other country where people are starving by the thousands and living out in the open... without food, medication, shelter... and the government doesn't care... but they receive food, medication, etc., from the USA when it is not stolen by their own government officials who kill, rape and torture without care of consequences!
I recall the McCarthy era when FBI would make my dad stand up bracing the wall, his pants dangling at his ankles while they ransacked the apartment or they'd ask for him after showing their badges at his job to cause him to get fired... because he fought for the rights of Hispanics, Blacks and Jews who were not allowed in unions, or to apply for Civil Servant jobs, or the Police or Fire Departments... and he'd quote the Constitution and laws... and was label led a Communist! Yes, I clearly recall Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X... and many things YOU cannot possibly know about... like when Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., would tell us not to shop in establishments where we were not allowed to be hired as a matter of policy...! Those were the misguided and ignorant PEOPLE doing the harm ... NOT the country, not the Constitution (that was ignored by those misguided and ignorant people). And times have changed for the better and will continue to get better.
This country is good but some people ain't. But, let me make this perfectly clear... not all White people are bad just as not all Black, Brown and Hispanics are good or bad... we have good and bad in every race, religion and political group, ethnic group, etc... let make sure we both agree on that!
It is SO easy to talk the talk but not as easy to walk the walk. Would you stand up and defend the rights of someone who is very unpopular and was accused of a horrible crime? THAT is what America is about... treating our enemies better than they would treat us! This country is far from perfect but it's better than any you name!
You don't wish to stand up and salute the American flag... in this country you have that right, liberty and freedom not to do it if you do not choose to do it...
You're lucky you are here in America to be able to express your views openly! There are other countries where you and I would not last very long... the governments would quickly see to it that we do not complain or criticize and find fault in their abuses and excesses and corruption and we would be beaten, jailed, tortured and possibly killed for many of the things we can do here openly...
Please take care and please be well.

Independence means: You can celebrate if YOU choose to , OR NOT, It's up to you.
You have a perspective, and so does everyone else.YOU can CHANGE yours when you wish to and to what you'd like it to be, your choice.
Some places , today in the 21st century, still can not and do not have the freedom to do this.
but this is just one perspective or way of seeing things.
I personally as a native american do not celebrate the independence of the white man here, because we (they) block people from their borders, Prison is an industry, not reform
90% of the inmates are probably in for a drug related charge. This culture thrives and benefits on ill health and peoples dysfunction and war.
education is very expensive and no one can live anywhere in the country on our minimum wage, which is less then a social security income . I have a single elderly relative that fought in korea who recieves just barely $1000 a month and lives in NYC, he depends on meals on wheels to eat, we discard the old and send them to homes to die, kids have to pay for lunch at school while crop surplus's sit in warehouses, our farmers are going bankrupt.
we are 5% of the population of the planet and we produce 25% of the atmospheric pollutants that will begin (if it hasn't already) to alter and provoke conditions that we aren't going to be able to live with or survive as nature unleashes it's responses. we waste way too much, we treat people like sh -t, and we are divided amongst ourselves. in a few hundred years, this new colony and independent government has done so much damage to a land that sustained itself, imposed thier religious beliefs, style of dress and customs on us and pushed us on reservations that they chose for us. so this is why I don't personally rejoice for the british deserters who came to rape and rob the land for their monetary gain and called themselves christian.but that was then and we are here now trying to ignore the worlds evils and go on with our little lives, saying we don't have anything to do with it, and raise our families and enjoy our pleasures and get by or get rich , but we can't, 9/11 was a rude awakening. and it didn't happen for no reason, did it? what did we do to provoke it?
However, I spent 3 years living in what we term a 3rd world country, they treated me like royalty because I was american, and I learned so much from the 3rd world , I came home a different person , but with all my complaints and contempt for the government , I still literally lay down and kissed the parking lot pavement when I made it back to the us of a. What I do rejoice in is the fact I have choices.and runnning water and electricity and that in this country as long as I have 2 feet I will never go hungry or unclothed because there are soup kitchens and churches all over that will feed someone, we don't have military police stopping our cars or governments freezing our savings and "borrowing" our money, So, we can find a job if we want to even if it's a lousy min wage job, or daily labor ticket, it is still here.
so it's all about perspective, we still have to love our country if we wan't to save her and set an example one person at a time by not taking so much for granted or wasting our resources.
and for 0 tolerance of the crap that our government pulls.just look for the good and do your part a s one person to make sure those horrible treatments of people don't happen again, teach your children , kindness. It goes a very long way.

I have a feeling that your question has something to do about slavery. To be honest with you, slavery was actually started in Africa which were both black & white people. Slavery was introduced to Europe from Africa. America didn't have anything to do with slavery considering it wasn't discovered yet.
