Windows XP is just making it easier to do so they market it as the Multimedia Solution but even Windows 3.1 can conceivably do what you asked to do.

It isn't quite as easy as that as Windows XP has nothing to do with it. It is the video card or tv/video capture card that is installed on your system that will determine whether you can or cannot.

If you don't have video capture card built into your video card or tv card then you cannot connect to the tv as you have no where to put the cables necessary in order to carry the signals from the tv to computer.

You are looking for a video in connector at the back of your laptop.

Depending on the connections available to you on your tv and laptop then you will buy cables equivalent to those. There are different options therefore I can't be specific.

All is not lost as you can buy video capture cards quite cheaply which will allow you to do this should you wish to.

Either someone's winding you up or there's a misunderstanding somewhere. You can't even copy files from your hard drive to DVD directly using WinXP, although you can get programs such as Nero, for example, for which can.

You would need a TV card inside your laptop OR a card that allows input of the tv signals which it can then send digitally to the DVD recorder in your laptop to record.

Personally I don't see why you'd want to do that? Just buy a recordable stand-alone DVD player and hook it up to your telly. Providing you have a digital aerial, hey presto you're ready to go! :)

buy something that you can hook up to your digital cable box. That way you can record tons of shows. Make sure your unit that you buy has like 10 to 20 gigabites of memory. Also make sure that your unit has a usb or firewire port. hook it up to your computer. If it needs to be formatted, get a convertor for mpeg 4 or something and convert the file, then burn it onto a disc using something like Nero burning rom. But tv tunes are cheaper
