Ok, it's not just an old wives' tale...chicken broth in chicken soup has been proven to be good for a cold. Gargling salt water is also an age-old remedy that is still more effective than many otc cough drugs. Also, boil water on your stove if you don't have a humidifier. The extra moisture in the air will help your cough. And sip hot water with a splash of lemon juice and a spoonful of honey in it for a very satisfying and soothing drink on your throat.

1 Tablespoon Dried or Fresh THYME
1 Teaspoon of Mint
3 TBS Honey
2 and 1/2 Cups of Boiling Hot Water (Distilled is best)
Steep THYME, MINT in Water for 7 min.
Strain
Drink One Cup at a time with Honey to taste.
This will stop the cough (unless it is a virus problem),
and open the lungs for easier breathing and help expell mucus.

Sometimes a bad consistant cough is a symptom of another underlying condition. My son coughed for 3 years before he was finally diagnosed with asthma. Now with the proper meds he rarely coughs at all. I had gone through tons of different cough syrups on the market before he was finally diagnosed properly.
My point.....SEE A DOCTOR!
