My favorite CD is Blondie's Greatest Hits: Sound and Vision. Blondie is considered a punk/rock/pop band. The CD has most of their best songs and includes a DVD with their music videos. It's awesome!

You forgot jazz! A nice place to start is late-50s early 60s. The initial phases of Dixieland, ragtime, swing, Big Band, bebop were waning, and the avant-garde fusion hadn't started yet. Pop music was in its infancy.
Most jazz top 10 on a desert island list John Coltrane "Love Supreme" at or near the top. Then there is always "Kind of Blue" which also has Coltrane but a session lead by M. Davis. Then there is Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. Oh, while you're at it, don't forget Duke Ellington & John Coltrane (also called Duke Ellington Meets John Coltrane). One more—Coltrane “Blue Train.”
There is the common thread of Coltrane & superior personnel. All are small group sessions, so you’re able to attend to the individual instruments. Of note, Coltrane was the leader on "Love Supreme" & "Blue Train." The leader or the co-leaders on all the dates (Monk, Davis, & Ellington) were major leaders in their own right, to make an understatement. And all highly seasoned composing performers in their prime. You won't go wrong with these, it's a nice nucleus. Just get them all.
When you're ready for opera, let me know! Actually, if you are trying to open up to new music, there IS a fabulous audio lecture course that traces the history of opera on audioCD (suitable for the car!) by the Teaching Company, something to the effect of "how to listen to and understand opera." Just fascinating & also wonderful, top-drawer lecturer & plenty of chunks of examples. Although he left out "Norma" by Bellini & all the Baroque operas e.g. Handel, to my annoyance. But I guess it's hard to compress 400 years of the genre into the lecture, so he was forgiven for the omissions; what WAS included was superlative. Watch the site for sales or get used on eBay.

Loveless, by My Bloody Valentine. It's classed somewhere in the shoegaze, or dream pop genre. Lots of muffled vocals, very fuzzy, warm distorted guitars, and sounds. It makes me feel like Ive got warm lava from a lava lamp in my veins, without the need for drugs. Genius.
EDIT 1:
To the guy who said he likes Sigur Ros: Awesome man. They're another band that I should list here. Takk is brilliant.

( ) by Sigur Ros (Yes, the title is '( )'). It's ambient/post-rock/shoegaze. If you've never heard of them, I'd suggest you first listen to the more rock oriented album, Takk...
And +1 to whoever mentioned Loveless, although I prefer Souvlaki by Slowdive for the best strictly shoegaze album. It's good to know not everyone listens to pop.
