Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb. It was originally recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones and became a popular song on the Northern Soul scene. It attained worldwide fame after it was covered in 1981 (1982 in the US) by Soft Cell. It has since been covered by numerous other groups.

The question says the original Tainted Love ...which was not by Soft Cell. Theirs was a cover version and is probably the one that most people remember for obvious reasons.
As previous noted in other answers Tainted Love was composed by Ed Cobb and ORIGINALLY recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964.

Well Soft Cell had the big hit with it and Marc Almond OF Soft Cell was the lead singer BUT they didn't sing the original version of it ... "Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb. It was originally recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones!

stop saying Soft Cell!!!!!! Listen to the guy before it was Gloria Jones in the 60's. It was a big Northern Soul record then in the 80's the Soft Cell guys covered it in the Electro style for which it is best know! Then Manson did nothing to it and released it 20 years on practically...
