I have a friend and he says I'm shallow and materialistic because I buy quality things. He thinks there's no need to spend on quality clothes, makeup, purses, shoes, shampoo, etc. He says there's no reason I can't go to Wal-Mart for those things. I don't understand this at all. I say this because we went to the mall and I bought some stuff at Lancome and some undies at Victorias Secret. He was bitching the whole time that I spend too much and that I'm materialistic. What do you all think? Just looking for opinions on what you guys think.

A couple people mentioned liking "labels" but that's not it at all. I simply like stuff that works better and will last longer. There are things that are WAY more expensive then what I but. I just like stuff that won't fall apart or not work.

well I'm not a guy but my view on this is that if he isn't paying for it then he has no say so and if you guys aint together he really has no say so but lot of guys are like that they are penny pinchers and they believe that we should buy cheap stuff to save money yaddah yaddah yaddah I had a friend like that and I told him simply look I would rather pay 5 bucks on some panties that are going to last vs. paying 80 cent and have them tear up in the washer and have to buy them 5 times why not get it over with and that svaes money b/c you aren't going to the store 5 times just once so there you go your not shallow just smart shopper what is good for the goose isn't always good for the gander or something like that

You get what you pay for...
Victoria's Secret undies last a hell of a lot longer than Wal-Mart undies. Buying quality stuff doesn't make you materialistic.
Merriam-Webster's definition of materialism:
Main Entry: ma·te·ri·al·ism
Function: noun
1 a : a theory that physical matter is the only or fundamental reality and that all being and processes and phenomena can be explained as manifestations or results of matter b : a doctrine that the only or the highest values or objectives lie in material well-being and in the furtherance of material progress c : a doctrine that economic or social change is materially caused -- compare HISTORICAL MATERIALISM
2 : a preoccupation with or stress upon material rather than intellectual or spiritual things

I don't think you are shallow, you just like labels....
you may be shallow if you brand someone something or you choose not to talk to someone just because they are not rich, wear cheap clothes, someone buys you something non-expensive and you don't like it on that account.... or someone is ugly .... then thats shallow.
Besides you aren't money grabbing are you? and you bought the items yourself........ You can do what you want with your own cash. Besides some clothes where you spend alot of cash on does actually lasts longer and they feel nicer to. So it's up to you.
Hell I can't survive on cheap back packs.... they don't last 2 months.... with the stuff I carry !
It depends to, some things I can go to Walmart, you know normal stuff where you can buy anywhere like toothpaste or something... but the nicer stuff like shoes or shirts.... come on they don't have those in Walmart !

I don't believe you're shallow. Personally I don't care much for labels and I focus more on buying things which I find to be quality products which work for me. For example, my shampoo is $30 a bottle but my antiperspirant is $2 a bottle. Go figure.

You are allowed indulgence. It doesn't make you shallow and does not give your friend permission to judge you, but since it's a friend, I guess it's ok. He does not believe in materialistic options and that is his opinion. He reserves the right to one. So do you and if you feel buying clothes and other things makes you feel better, than you should. Unless, of course, it creates a bigger inconvenience to him or any other person.

People could brand being materialistic as being shallow, others could class it is having standards (not that all designer shops apply that principle!) You know if you're truly shallow and so does your friend. If he really thinks your shallow and still hangs around with you what does that say about him? The main point is be yourself and if others don't like it you can 'show them the door.'

well sometimes if you spend a little more, then the stuff lasts...you buy a good quality non Chinese made pair of shoes, then they're comfortable and last years...but you can buy junk, uncomfortable shoes from China at wal-mart and they'll last a few months, and your feet will hurt...it's your choice!

I agree with your friend on one level. Why buy something at an expensive store when you can get it at a discount price somewhere else? On the other hand, he sounds like a jerk. It's your money. Blow it however you want to.
