depends on the type of birth control, oral contraceptives can add hormones to your breast milk if you're breastfeeding, that might not be a good idea. norplant, patch, injections all add high levels of hormones to your system. let your Dr know if you are breastfeeding before getting any of those. birth control usually starts as soon as you start having sex after the your baby is born, Drs usually says wait 4 - 6 wks after the birth to have sex, give your body a chance to heal (not to mention shrink) as soon as you have your post-partum visit, tell the Dr you want birth control, now.

Progestin only birth control pill can be started immediately post-partum regardless of breastfeeding status. Combined oral contraceptives (ie. estrogen + progestin) can be considered after 3-4 weeks of well established milk flow.

This depends on the kind of birth control, and whether you want to breast feed or not.
Breast feeding woman don't go on the combo pills, they go on progesterone only...
It all depends on your OBGYN, and what you want...
Remember Breast feeding is not adequate enough birth control :)

After my 2nd son was born, and I wasn't breast feeding, the day after I had him the doctor asked me if I wanted to start it . They gave me a shot in the hosp. JUST ASK FOR IT.
