While I have no experience in the field, I recommend you get a degree in communication or journalism. You should learn how to write and speak well and articulate to your audience in a language and tone they can understand. Credibility is I think the most important trait in a journalist.

Don't do a degree in media or journalism! Do a degree in English and join the university newspaper. When you are close to graduating apply for internships with local and national newspapers as well as structured oppourunities such as the type the BBC and I think The Times offer.

While you don't absolutely have to have a degree it would be perculiar for you to get very far without one.

Go to a school with a good journalism program. Apply for that program. Then take the required classes and also consider getting an internship or two in the field. One you take the introduction journalism class you are given a ton of information that will help you decide what specific type of journalism you are interested in, and you can cater the rest of your education to that.
