My son is 5 yrs old and broke his elbow on Thursday. He had surgery on Friday morning to put pins in the bones. The doctor said he shouldn't return to school until this Friday, which means I have to stay home with him. I am missing 5 days of work. Does this sound right? I want to go back to work but I am afraid to go against dr.'s advise.

Missing a full week of work hurts but your son needs you more right now than your job. This happens to all parents at one time or another, guess this is just your time. :(
If the problem's financial maybe a family member can help you out temporarily with either your child care or your bills for the month.

If he had surgery to reset the bone, it is serious enough for him to stay home for several days before he returns to school. Listen to the doctor. He isn't trying to pull the wool over your eyes--if he can't go back for a week, then so be it. You certainly don't want him returning to school, bumping into someone, having something on his elbow get out of whack--and having to go back again thus requiring more time off for you from work. Perhaps your boss will let you work from your house until you can return.

That is pretty sound advice.
Your son is only 5, and they just put the pins in....
They need 7-10 days to start to heal...
They are afraid that he will be injured by playing, or being bumped by other children.
I would have said a whole week as well...

You are right; u should not do against thee doctor's advice. it will be hard to stay home without going for work but th reality is u son has to be looked after careful as he had a surgery, he has to be at home or rest for at least 3 months. i can understand that u r work is important then isn't u r son important than that?

I would go with what the doctor says, tho if he's feeling a lot better sooner, maybe ask the doctor again. Some work places will help you in times like this, and help you with expenses. Talk to HR and see if they have a plan like FMLA or something.
Can't you get someone else to stay with him? Can you bring him to work?

When my 6 year old daughter broke her arm she could not attend while she had a "whole arm cast" on. This cast went up to her shoulder. She could not pull her pants up and down by herself to go to the bathroom. The school said this was an issue and I could either come to the school to be with her or homeschool her temporarily. I chose to homeschool during this time.

One week after surgery and you are complaining. Your school will want a note for him to come back anyhow.
Check with the hospital's, some of them have sick care. What about your family or a neighbor. If you are that concerned about your job, it maybe worth the money.

I would follow what the doctor says. Can you find a sitting you feel comfortable enough to have him stay with so you can work? I know how it feels to have to fight over the idea of staying home or working it is hard. I hope he feels better soon.

it pretty much has to do with the childs pain tollerance. If he is still on pain meds then dont send him. those can make him very sleepy. After a couple of days if he seems to be his normal self, send him to school. If he needs to come home he can call you to pick him up. Make sure he can go to the bathroom with out any assistance.
P.S. Have him wear sweats or like gym shorts so he wont have to zip them.

Do as Doctor says. The child has an open wound & can get an infection. Is there no one you can leave him with? Good luck & I hope he heals well
