Has anyone figured out what the heck "Stay" was about?

It is a small movie, and it was really good until the ending. The acting was great, the cinematography was awesome, the music really set the mood. So why didn't this movie make a bigger splash? I think it was because of the ending. I am still trying to make sense of it. Has anyone figured it out?

The actors were Ewan McGregor, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Watson.

Oops, I mean Naomi Watts (not Emma Watson).

The whole movie was the delusion of man dying. The main character was dying and the people around him were popping up in his delusion.
