Dinasaurs, now Humans. Is this random that humans evolved to be so much smarter, or is there something else to this? If humans were to die out, would the next species on this planet (if there is one) be more "intelligent" than human beings?

I understand how one species gets smarter (evolution), but after a species becomes extinct, then will the next species after it become smarter than the species before it? If so, how does this happen? Like humans are more intelligent than dinosaurs, even when comparing years on the planet (I would suppose anyway). Will the next species always be smarter than the previous species? If so, why?

There is nothing in evolutionary theory that says a
new species has to be more intelligent than the
previous species. For the first two billion years or
so of life on earth there were only bacteria. They
evolved into many different kinds, but none of
them showed anything that could be called
intelligence.

Human beings have been around for only a few
million years. The level of intelligence of organisms has shown some increase, but as far
as the fossil record indicates this has mostly been
only in about the last 65 million years. We have
no way of telling how intelligent dinosaurs may have been, or any other exinct organism for that
matter. If human beings died out it is unlikely that
any other comparably intelligent species would
appear.

I could be totally wrong on this so lets just say its only my opinion. I would think that each new generation is smarter because of the need to know since the world is advancing one must advance with it or be crushed. Kinda like only the strongest and the fittest survive. There wasnt to much need to be all that smart back in the begining of time since there were so few people they didnt work and could catch and grow or gather any food that they needed to survive. I also think that if humans were to die out then it would probably mean that was it and the whole planet was history. Man survived the ice age so if we were to die out it would have to mean the we had finally suceeded in distroying earth.

Because the smarter species become, the better they survive and adapt. Adaptation is the key to surviving according to the theory of evolution. If humans die out, it doesn't necessarily mean any other specie will become smarter than us, though...
