I have an oldsmobile 1996 88 and for some reason when i leave the car parked for more than 5 hours or so and go start the car up to drive, i change it from park to drive and it just sits there or it will go like 5 mph while in drive or reverse. It takes a minute for it to change. What could be causing this? Transmission?

This is a common problem with older cars. The belts in the transmission start to wear. The transmission needs to be either repaired or replaced. Check your transmission for a low level of fluid. If low fill the transmission to specification(owners Manuel).I hope for you that the fluid level is the problem. Good LLuck Teacher.

Sounds to me like you need a transmission fluid and filter change. Check your fluid level and inspect the color of the fluid on the dipstick....if brown, dirty, or burnt looking, that's likely the problem. Take it to a reliable shop and have it flushed, filter changed, and refilled with new fluid. This fix is a whole lot easier and cheaper than a tranny rebuild.

Hope this info helped.

Start with the trans fluid check first but the problem is more than likey a line pressure problem.....either your filter is plugged ( doesnt happen often) or the pump is going south.....some other causes would be broken or bent torque converter internal fins....basicaly something is restricing or limiting fluid flow from the sump or pan to the vaolve body.

Hi Nenita! this is Anup from Nasik Road. I am student of Automobile Engg. Your problem seems interesting. I think it has got something to do with clutch. You get your car's clutch serviced. Or may be the clutch free pedal play is not sufficiently given.Or may be your combination of accelerating and relesing the clutch pedal is not proper.About transmission you asked, may be the gear shifter mechanism requires servicing.
For any other querries related to automobiles you can e-mail me at aksanup9287@yahoo.com. May be I shall have better solutions to your querries.
Goodbye!!

Check your Transmission fluid, it could just be low. If it isn't low, then have your transmission looked at by a mechanic. But it sounds like you have low transmission fluid.

It feels like the Idle Aircontrol Valve or motor "IAC".... you may get away with giving the intake an extremely stable cleansing with some intake cleanser... you could take the IAC out and hose it down with carb cleanser and placed it back in. see if it makes a differance. If no longer purchase a sparkling one, there to no longer undesirable.. that twelve months and style souldnt be over $60. you may also have a vacume leak, yet no longer rather hassle-free... i could sparkling the intake and IAC, then circulate from there... if it nevertheless messes up, purchase an IAC
