Can anyone explain the end of the movie Silent Hill? I didn't get why the husband couldn't see the wife. She wasn't really home? I just don't understand. Help!

Heres the quick answer: everyone is dead - except for the husband, and the people who were not stuck in Silent hill.
Ok, now the long explanation - the Cop, the Mother, and the Daughter died during that car chase. They were tricked into swerving by the vision of the little ghost girl in the street. We later learn it was not a little ghost girl, but a demon who took on the appearance of the little ghost girl. The demon is acting out revenge on behalf of the little ghost girl who bought the revenge with her soul. The ghost girl sold her soul to the demon because she wanted revenge on the fanatical cult who tried to sacrifice her by burning her to death - incidentally, they lit the hotel on fire where the sacrifice took place and all died in the fire (although they didn't realise it). The cult wanted to sacrifice the ghost girl because her mother was a single mother (sacriledge) and the ghost girl was pregnant at only 11 years old. Never mind that she was impregnanted during a rape - she still needed to be "cleansed". So, needless to say, the little girl became a little cynical and decided to sell her soul for revenge.
The demon's revenge was to take the souls of the cultists who died in the fire, and put then in a purgatory which looked just like Silent Hill. Then it would kill them one by one when it opened the gates of hell onto this purgatory. The cultists didn't know they died. They believed that their prophecies came true, and that armageddon occured. They learned to predict the coming of the darkness (they sounded an alarm to alert everyone), and sought shelter in the church. Their conviction was so strong that the demon could not enter the church, and so was not able to exact the little ghost girl's revenge. This is where the mother, daughter, and cop come in.
The demon needed the daughter because she resembled the little ghost girl (turns out the daughter was adopted, and her birth mother was the little ghost girl, who delivered right before death - that is why they looked so much alike). The demon wanted to use her as bait to lure the cult members into the open - the cultists believed that the daughter was the demon, and they thought they could end armageddon by catching the daughter and "cleansing" her too. The mother and the cop were just caught in the cross fire, and ended up dying in the same car crash and being brought to Silent Hill as well. The mother knew the demon was the key to all this, so she went to see the demon. The demon explained the whole situation, and said it would save the daughter and her if she allowed the demon to enter her body. The demon could not enter the church on its own, but inside the body of the mother it could access it freely. The mother allowed the demon to possess her, and then went back to the church. The cultists were about to sacrifice her daughter, but she stopped them by unleashing the demon inside the church. The demon and the little ghost girl get their revenge.
The movie ends when the mother and daughter go back to the house. You can take that in two ways, either the mother and daughter didn't know they were dead and wanted to go home, or they knew they were dead and wanted to be somewhere familiar.
Good movie, great plot, and awesome special effects.

Everyone in the town was dead. The mother and the cop died when they crashed. The town is actually purgatory. The little girl is trying to send the "townspeople"/spirits to hell to punish them. The husband can't see them, but can sense their presence because their dead and in limbo.
