I'm not sure if this is the same thing as what you're talking about, but, I have this Catholic friend...when he goes through an orange light (it's technically yellow, but it just turned red!), he does this thing where he whispers some kind of prayer or oath to God, kisses his hand, and touches the visor overhead.

I think it's sort of a 'God willing I don't get pulled over or get into a car accident' type of thing.

From a distance, itt might look like he's raising his hand.

ha,ha.. I'm one of those stupid people that do that... and I don't even know why it's just habit.. glad you asked the question so I can find out the answer.. although I think it is just a superstition thing as to not get hit by a car going through the lights from the other way... but I spose i will find out the real reason soon enough..

They must have heard someone say, " All inconsiderate a$$holes please raise your hand". And responded apropriately. It will not prevent them from being pulled over and ticketed for running a red light or "failure to observe a traffic cotrol device."
