The Sun is not a solid. There are no stones, mountains etc. on the Sun. The Sun is made of gas. This gas is hydrogen. When 2 hydrogen atoms form to make helium, that is where the energy comes from. Two atoms forming one and releasing energy is called fusion.

Larger stars can create heavy elements up to iron though... and up till this point they too are "burned".

BUT you must remember that the sun is not "burning" like a fire. It is fusing elements through nuclear fusion. This begins with light elements like hydrogen and helium... they are turned into heavier and heavier elements. In the process energy is given off and so the sun seems to burn.

So your statement would be true if you said the nuclear fusion of the sun can fuse heavy elements within it.
