Himalaya- International Movie, Two thumbs up!!
(Director: Eric Valli, English Subtitles, 109 min)
In the Dolpo region of Nepal, it's time for the villagers to trek across the mountains to trade their salt for grain. (They travel by caravan - with yaks as their beasts of burden.) Conflict arises when Karma (Gurgon Kyap) returns to the village with the body of Lhakpa, the caravan leader and son of chief Tinle (Thinlen Lhondup). Tinle blames Karma for his son's death and refuses to let him become the new caravan leader - this is the job of the future chief. He goes to the monastery to ask his second son, Norbou (Karma Tenzing Nyima Lama), to become chief, but Norbou refuses to return home after living most of his life as a monk. Tinle names his grandson Tserin (Karma Wangiel) as the new leader even though he is only a boy, and gives him a chief's name Passang.
With winter fast approaching, Karma gathers the young men of the village and convinces them they must leave on their own before the time appointed by the gods or they will never make it across the mountain pass before the winter storms. Tinle leads a caravan with his daughter-in-law, Pema (Lhapka Tsamchoe), Passang, Norbou (who does return to help his father), and the old men of the village. Tinle refuses to give up and elects to travel the dangerous lake trail to catch up to Karma before he crosses through the pass.
Life is harsh in Nepal for these people who seem to be living in a different time. They are a beautiful people who honor tradition and family, have a sense of humor, and show respect by touching foreheads together. Their faces reflect the harshness of their lives, but they also show a great deal of warmth and character.
Norbou is a wise man - everything he says is profound. There's a heart-warming scene when he is reunited with his mother. Tinle passing the torch to Karma (when they are finally ready) is a powerful and emotional moment.
In the middle of the film when they're on their journey, it is relentless walking/climbing, we started to feel like Passang and wanted to go home, but this is a tale of pride and endurance and so we ventured forth. The mountains "all look the same" and nothing is happening - you really get the sense of how long the trek is. The slow feeling passes when they get to the lake trail, where the tension and the view are both unbelievable.
The setting for this film is so vast and so magnificent - this is a movie that should be seen on the big screen in order to really get the scope. When they are walking through the snowstorm (real snowstorm, not a Hollywood version), and all a person can see is the snow and the person (or yak) standing next to them - it's pretty impressive.
"You may not think that a film about Nepalese herdsman can be gripping but you would be wrong - this is rich both visually and in the depth of the characters. The movie bogs down briefly but as an audience member no one will ask you to throw rocks at the yaks to make them move uphill."
Hope you'll like this movie, i did.

DUEL.
It was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Dennis Weaver. And, you know, that filthy tractor trailer truck. What a story. Had me on the edge of my seat.
Blurb: A traveling businessman, Dennis Weaver, is suddenly menaced on the highway by a huge diesel truck. Although he can never see the psychopathic driver of the truck, he soon realizes that this guy is out to kill him. Duel is a classic of the action-suspense genre which helped launch the career of director Steven Spielberg.
