I have used the Smart FTP software before. What I would like to do is transfer large numbers of large photo files to family members across the country. Is secure FTP space available for free on Yahoo? I really only need to use the space for a short term. I would also be interested in knowing about longer term solutions, but short term is my first priority.

Well, you can use your Yahoo Briefcase to share the photos with your family.
All you would have to do is create a folded for the pictures and give it public access, unless all the members in your family have yahoo accounts. If they all have yahoo accounts you can leave it private and just grant privlages to those you specify, then you have to input all their IDs.
After that, it's a matter of uploading all your photos. However, I would suggest editing and re-sizing your photos before uploading them to save on space.
I have a 5 megapixal camera and I was taking my pictures at the maximum quality and size, so they were quite large. When I uploaded them it ate up the room very quickly, and it was very difficult for those who were still using dialup for their Internet access to download the pictures. So, now I'm in the process of editing all my pictures to make them smaller in size (5x7 instead of 8x10) and I'm using a little compression on the files when I save them.
On an average I'm going down from 1.8 Meg to 250 KB.

Yahoo account does not provide FTP space to the free account. If you have paid for a domain or a web hosting, then you will have the webspace to make your own FTP.

Yahoo does have a free website service at Geocities.com. There is a free option to utilize it, but it comes with advertising. It is pretty easy to use and update.
