I Was Only Nineteen by Redgum

Thought I'd bore you all with the lyrics - hope some Aussies are out there reading this! It's a great song that gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it

Mum and Dad and Denny saw the passing out parade at Puckapunyal
It was a long march from cadets
The sixth battalion was the next to tour
and it was me who drew the card
We did Canungra and shoal water before we left

And Townsville lined the footpaths as we marched to the quay
This clipping from the paper shows us young and strong and clean
And theres me in my slouch hat with my SLR and greens
God help me I was on - ly nine teen

From Vung Tau riding chinooks to the dust at Nui Dat
Id been in and out of choppers now for months
But we made our tents a home, VB, and pinups on the lockers
And an Asian orange sunset though the scrub

And can you tell me doctor why I still cant get to sleep
And why night times just a jungle dark and a barking M16
And whats this rash that comes and goes can you tell me what it means
God help me, i was only nineteen

A four week operation every step could be your last one
on two legs ; It was a war within yourself
But you wouldnt let your mates down till they had you dusted off
so you closed your eyes and thought about something else

Then someone yelled out "contact" and a bloke behind me swore
We hooked in there for hours then a god almighty roar
Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon
God help me, he was going home in June

I can still see Frankie lying drinking tinnies in the Grand Hotel
On a thirty six hour rec leave in Vung Tau
And i can still see Frankie lying screaming in the jungle
till the morphine cam and killed the bloody row

And the Anzac legends didnt mention mud and blood and tears
And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real
I caught some pieces in my back that I didnt even feel
God help me I was only nineteen

And can you tell me doctor why I still cant get to sleep
And why the channel seven chopper chills me to my feet
And whats this rash that comes and goes can you tell me what it means
God help me, I was only nineteen..

So wait...are we talking about songs that do this in a *Good* way or ones that do this in a *Bad* way, because I get the feeling folks are confused....?

In any event, large *lumps* of things folks call music make me sick to my stomach....

--almost all Country & Western music just irritates me,
--ditto with anything from Jon Bon Jovi,
--and that version of "hip-hop" called crunk, ugh....who let the imbeciles off the Short Bus and in the studio?

But I have to admit, as far as songs I *hate* go....there is a special spot in my brain for....*shudders* Elton John. "Benny and the Jets." It goes on for about 2 whole minutes longer than necessary, and for what? "BennyBennyBBBBBennyyy..." Really, the repeating repetition of redundancy like nearly gave me a seizure back when the song was *new*, ok? O_O

As for stuff I like.....well, if it doesn't irritate me I will listen to just about anything *not* listed immediately above....

But I have fond memories of Stevie Wonder...Nine Inch Nails...Kylie Minogue....Oakenfold (and way *way* too many techno and disco tunes to name) and Disturbed (ditto, way too many metal and nu-metal groups to mention)....and also some fond memories of Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Mozart....

I'm not picky really....I just don't like either honky-tonk steel guitar. Or lyrics that seemingly *celebrate* getting piss-yourself drunk. Or anything that revels in being *dumber than dirt*.

(or anything that induces seizure potential in me in an *irritating* way, duh)

I would have to go with " Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd..its just a beautiful song that makes me tear up everytime. That and Wonderful by Stone Temple pilots.. that makes me remember someone I once loved.. well actually they both do ..

Either Bad Day or You're Beautiful: these two songs suck so bad they make me want to puke each and every time I am unable to avoid them!!!

Please award Best Answer points to me right now because I deserve them, as you can now plainly see and must agree. I do not want to wait because I am not at all patient with you.
