He robbed a plane and managed to get away with the money and hide it. He was then arrested for a different crime. Micheal figured out who he was and wanted him to join in the escape plan but he said no. Then when he found out that his daughter was dying he changed his mind. He got stabbed by the guard Bellick while fighting with him after Bellick discovered the hole in the room that the inmates were working on. He managed to overpower the guard and tie him up. He died in the infirmary during the escape but not before he told Micheal and the rest where the money was hidden. This season it looks like most of the escapees are going to try to get to the money. Just to add to anjela_f's answer - Charles Westmoreland is actually D.B. Cuper. the guy who stole millions of dollars but was in prison for another crime.
