Many choices.

If you are like george bush, only get books with small words, big print, and lots of pictures.

If you are like a normal student, read a page, then get up, get some water, come back, read another page.

One page at a time, with a SHORT break, will keep you going, and you will actually (hopefully) think about what you read (which is always a good thing).

The other thing is (seriously) get up earlier, and do it in the morning. For some reason, the brain functions better in the morning.

I know, you will never follow that last piece of advice, so try reading one page at a time, and taking short (1min) breaks.

Some of this is habit. I got so that as soon as I opened certain books I'd feel sleepy! We also need to remember that we are not reading it because it is interesting, but we are reading it to extract certain information from it. It's kind of like driving for a long time, also. we get highway hypnosis from sitting still and making only small movements while our eyes and head are mainly facing forward.

Take notes - the movement of the arm and hand, and switch of the brain to writing helps us. When you hit something you should remember, write it down. Sit straight, so you can't relax enough to fall asleep, and shift position often - sitting first forward in the seat and legs forward, and then back, cuz our bodies are made to move around some. Munch on something crunchy. Use a chair with wheels so you can roll from one side of the room to another, or spin a bit when you get too bored. When you start to feel really overdosed on one book, then I say go ahead and doze for a few because that gives your brain a chance to process whaat you've just red. But before you go ahead and doze, get up and stretch and then go lay on the bed,, no dozing in the chair.

Drink lots of cold water, run a fan to cool you off, work for 5 minutes and walk around for 5 minutes. Eventually you can work up to 30 minutes without a break. There will be lots of boring books in the future, but once in awhile there will be one you cannot put down.... Hang in there!

Find other sources for the information....look in the library for books, check the internet...look for movies that were made on the subject. Look for other ways to learn the same information.

Read early in the day when you have the most energy and avoid reading around distractions (t.v., friends, family) or late in the day.
