What type of Gas Cylinder & what type of gas in the cylinder? For example there are some multi-fuel camping cylinders that are different then the small propane cylinders. Since you didn't say Tank... then I am guessing you mean something small.

General Causes: Left out in Sunlight, over-pressurized, & leaks

Best bet read your warning lable....

and as a point of reference.... did you have one that exploded or are seeking ways to make one explode... the wording of your question makes me concerned about your intention for asking.................

Could you be a little more specific? Are you reffering to the propane cylinders used for small grills while camping? Or the Medium sized tanks for Grilling? or the Very Large tanks that are usually placed in the back yard?

Improperly manufactured or filled . To much heat on tank, a mixture of gas and oxygen in the tank.
