I'm hoping this is something simple that I can repair myself. Can anyone tell me (in detail) how I could check for a short or whatever might be causing the blinker to stay on?

First try switching on your hazards. If the lights flash the bulbs are all ok. Move on to changing a flasher relay. Check your owners manual and look at your fuse box under your console. Hopefully it will be there with the rest of the fuses. Modern cars have several square flasher relays. It should be approx. inch and a half square black plastic. Get a good set of pliers because it is hard to grip with your fingers. It should have approx. 3-5 prongs when you remove it. Just replace it with a new one. Old model cars have round silver flasher relays. You can also try this, go to a auto parts store in your area and purchase a relay. If they're really good with customer service, they will help your replace it. Good luck.

this sounds like the flasher relay is bad. This is the doodad that causes the blinking you need for the turn signal. Most cars now have them under the dash or in a box with the fuses. It most likely is round on the sides and flat on the top. A good auto parts store can sell you one and tell you where it is on your car if you don't have an owners manual.

Or, it could be one of the bulbs. Put the blinker on and look at the outside bulbs. The front or rear one could be out and that would cause it to not blink.

Turn on the blinker, if it lights up on dashboard, then walk to back and front of car. If the light appears to be brighter on that side which the blinker is on, then it's NOT the bulb. Also check to see if you're brake lights are on, as they run on the same circuit as your turnsignal.

Perhaps it's just a bad ground.

It's NOT a fuse.

It could be a blinker "fuse" located in the fuse block.

You need to provide more data to get a better answer.

Or it might be a new turnsignal switch is needed, (under the horn on the steering column. You MIGHT be able to do this, but I doubt it. (because you probably have an air bag in the way).

This is usually the result of one of the blinker bulbs being blown out. Check all blinker bulbs and replace as required. The blinker relay could be bad but check bulbs first.

someplace on your motor vehicle...it ought to be in a fuse panel, it ought to purely be plugged right into a wiring harness decrease than the sprint board (frequently on the motive force's factor) there will be what's called a "flasher." it rather is purely a element that shuts the capacity on and stale on your blinkers. there is frequently basically the only for each blinking easy on the motor vehicle. If there's a properly matched flasher that is going at a swifter cost, basically replace that extremely than the only you have have been given in there now.

Since it is only on one side I would say you have a bulb burned out. Turn on the blinker and see which bulb it is. Look in your owners manual and see how to change them. Most cars its very easy.

Correct answer? Bad bulb...each has 2 filaments in it. Yours has one broken filament. Educated guess- it's the front one. Turn on your emergency flashers and then look to see which bulb isn't doing it's thing. Replace it... Problem solved. If you can't figure it out, go to your local Auto Zone or similar parts place...they'll come out and inspect it for you, tell you which bulb you need, and if you're nice to them, even install it. Hope this info helped.

If it was a fuse or a bulb the light would not come on at all. You most likely need to replace the flasher can, you can buy these from wreckers and they are not hard to install. If you have a modern car you may need to take it to be fixed.
