Some of the books I had t0 read in high school that I actually liked:

A Separate Peace
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
1984 (heard Animal farm was good too) by George Orwell
Far From the Madding Crowd

Outside of school:
Dragonrider series by Anne McCaffrey
Dragonlance chronicles (Weiss and Hickman) good if you like Lord of the Rings, but nowhere near as wordy or boring.

Early teens I liked Lad, A Dog (Terhune)
Watership Down

Funny stuff - try The Nanny Diaries

Or try reading the book version of any movies that you liked.

Young adult as in what age range? The 13 and a 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear is pretty good, but it may be a little too childish and silly for some peoples' tastes. The Obernewtyn series are also quite good. Turnabout is a good book, but is more for people in years 6-9.

Hope I could help! By the way, please put in what age group you mean by "young adults". It would help very much.

There are surely thousands. What are you interested in? Science fiction, classical, realistic fiction, adventure, westerns?religious theme?cyberpunk? splatterpunk? techno thriller?
Wikipedia have several pages regarding youth novels.
If you haven't read all of the Harry Potter series, you may want to read them just so you know what other people are talking about.
Some of my personal favorites are anything by Anne McCaffrey ( especially if you are into dragons)
Gary Paulsen ( survival themes)
Ken Thomasma ( focus on native American culture)
Annie on My Mind ( about two girls falling in love)
Luna( transgendered brother)
C.S Lewis Narnia series, but also take a look at the Screwtape Letters
Lord of the Flies
Diary of Anne Frank
The two sites below list books and authors favored by young adults.

A very good author is Sharon Draper. Her books i like (and read lol) are:
Tears of a Tiger
Forged By Fire
Darkness Before Dawn
Romiette and Julio

She has others, i just didnt read them. And the cool thing about the first three i listed is that they are a trilogy.

go to the book store, look at books that sound interesting to you, then you read the back of the book which is the overview of the book. If you like the overview, read the book. I like David Baldacci and Lee Child. I don't know if these two authors are young adult though.

Try Angela's Ashes or 'Tis by Frank McCourt. They are both memoirs of Frank's life and it's not really too deep, but it is engaging. The writing style is pretty informal - almost as if he's talking to you directly as he tells you about his past. It's the story about how Frank grows up through hardships - his coming of age, and how he deals with life (being born in New York, and then growing up in Ireland before returning to the land of hope and dreams, America), struggling through poverty, war, his past with his family and how he manages to become who he is today: a teacher.

It's an interesting read if you want something more real. I absolutely loved it.

All of George Orwell's books are interesting and say something about society. For Ford's sake Brave New Works is must read. To get pun you'll have to read it written by A Huxley
