We have a grove between our lips and nose because that is where we sealed up so to speak. When we were developing in the womb and our cells were dividing and fusing together. That is one of the places that the cells fused together and left a grove on our face. You can also tell this on the nose of some people, more commonly known as the butt nose.

"The philtrum is the midline groove in the upper lip that runs from the top of the lip to the nose. The way the philtrum appears is determined genetically. In some syndromes this grove is shortened"

there's a cool legend about this groove. I heard it referring to Plato but I'm not too sure about that.
Before we're born we're immortal souls drifting in space, having the knowledge of everything and seeing the "ideas" of things (the essence of them). When we're born we forget that we used to do that, but whenever we see something we know what it is because we have the image of its "idea" and we remember it. So far this is what Plato used to say.
The legend is about the way we forget that perfect world of ideas: when we're born there's an angel holding a staff and he/she taps it on our mouths to make us forget everything. This tapping creates the groove, and it's also what makes the babies cry when they're born.

Still, I'm pretty sure the developmental explanations might be a bit more accurate.

Because during growth in the womb the upper part of the lips and cleft originally grow separately, and then merge together.

I think its because of the little "divider" vein thing in your mouth right under that groove.

If you look at most animals, there is a split there, where the animals can raise their lips up to show their teeth for threats. We don't need this capability, so it grew out.

Because it wouldn't be attractive if it was just straight across, plus when we talked, screamed or ate it would be too tight.
