Some people say that you need 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle. Meaning that if you had a half filled 55 gallon, it could only hold a turtle under 3 inches... When you get into the 10 inch range... that's a little extreme. Ideally yes, you would give them a ton of space, but then, ideally, they would be in the wild... Generally a 30 gallon is considered the BARE MINIMUM for a small adult male. Females get bigger and a 55 would be the smallest they could comfortably live in. The bigger you can go the happier and healthier the turtle will be. There's a TON of information available online if you just search for it, but here's a place to get you started.

You will need a tank / something which can hold water - not a cage. They are mostly in water, though u could put in some flat stones half submerged - so it can climb out of the water sometimes. Purchase as big as possible - or make do with what u have for now according to its size - but later....after a couple of years u will need to adjust according to the size it grows. I had a 3 feet tank for a 5 cm diameter turtle - but kept upgrading - now my turtles are 4 years old and they live in a pond in my garden.

Make sure there is sufficient water and also "basking" area. Generally for a "normal sized pet shop turtle" a 30 gallon would be a good start. Do NOT forget filtration (and/or water changes) they don't like dirty water any better than you do. Check out the excellent turtle care site listed here.

A 10 gallon tank is OK for a baby.
He will need a bigger set up when he gets bigger.
Mine are kept in a kiddie pool with the island in the center with their heat lamp above that.
They have to be able to get completely out of the water.
They eat floating turtle food, crickets, worms & fish (I give mine live minnows)

He doesn't need a cage - his home is on his back! Honestly, I have no idea. Small is okay, as long as it's tastefully decorated.
