I was looking at a type of bat the other day (producer will go unnamed) and one half of it was discoloured grain, there were about six of them like this...my dad managed to get the same type bat with good willow but would this discolouration have affected the bat's performance?

The colour of the wood is normally related to weather during it's growth, if the colour is changed part way through the wood, it may have been caused by significant weather pattern changes. This shouldn't affect the quality or performance of the bat at all.
Unless... One dodgy thing that some manafacturers will try is blending. I have only ever seen one bat like this before, and I don't think it is very common, certainly not with the big reputable manafacturers, ie Gray Nichols, Kookaburra, GM, Slazenger etc
What this is, is where they have a piece of wood with an imperfection, they will try to cut it out, and glue it together with another bat (ie cut similar edges and glue into one bat). This is very uncommon but I have seen one like it before, and it had noticable colour changes. If you suspect this, don't buy it, there is a high risk of the blade breaking when you hit a powerful shot, and you will probably also experience power loss when playing shots.
If you can tell it is definately one piece of wood, I wouldn't worry about the colour though.

sure it extremely is needed . Ppl won't b'liv bt it ws ME who used certainly one of these form bat for the 1st time in our streets. I had made dat bat via lowering its physique and increasing its shelter length- yet there ws No flexibility contained in the shelter like the Mongoose bat has. it works. And for bowlers; who feels tht they are going to get overwhelmed isn't achieveable. With each and every new discovery there are hundreds of blunders to boot. If Mongoose bat is the recent question for the bowlers, they better knw that for each question there's a answer.
